Passive Solar Greenhouses

With the growing environmental awareness of the past decades many people have opted, and are opting, for growing their own vegetables and fruit, or just flowers. But in order to have a year-round yield that keeps fresh vegetables on your table, you need a greenhouse. This is especially true if you live in a northern region, where a greenhouse allows you to take care of your garden products in a controlled environment, and releases you from worries about frost, flooding, burning, and many other problems related to outdoor agriculture.

Solar passive greenhouses go a step further in improving the agricultural process, being excellent choices when it comes to maintaining agricultural affordability and durability throughout the year, not to mention they are also an efficient way to use local resources.

These greenhouses trap solar radiation that is then used in the photosynthesis process, but their greatest advantage is that they are particularly effective for gardeners who have to deal with extreme temperatures and weather conditions, since the absorbed sunlight energy can be used even during cold short days. This is made possible thanks to the active venting fan systems that are powered by the absorbed solar energy, and keep the greenhouse cool and moist if needed. There are models in the market that come with the materials that will collect and deliver water to the plants, too.

Solar greenhouses are simple in design and they do not require a lot of maintenance as there are no mechanical systems involved. This type of greenhouses are equipped with thermal mass walls and floors to absorb solar energy, which should not exceed 6 inches in thickness nor be covered completely by planters or floor coverings. Their glass windows face south, which enables the use of up to 75% of the sun’s energy that strikes them.

Naturally, the building costs are slightly higher for a passive solar greenhouse. It is necessary to prepare the ground and lay a foundation that may cover the entire floor, or just outline the perimeter depending on the gardener’s aims. Even if it is only the perimeter there are obvious gains for the soil is kept from freezing or drying. Some carpentry skills and the ability to read schemes are required, which means contracting a specialist is probably the best option if you don’t have these skills.

Still, a passive solar greenhouse offers all the advantages of a traditional greenhouse and much more.
