Should I keep my rooster with his sitting hen?
Yes, i have a pair of Old English game bantam, and the female just started laying eggs like 2 days ago. But one problem SHOULD I LEAVE THE ROOSTER (HER MATE) WITH HER. II’MSCARED HE MIGHT DO SOMETHING STUPID….well my cousin said to take him out hes gonna be to sexed up sometimes, but my father said to keep him, he might be a help. So what should i do….?
P.S. if i separate them will they still know that they are each others mate…if i do?
The rooster is going to annoy the hen if you are allowing her to become broodie, and sit and hatch her eggs.
However if you mean this is a young hen that just started to lay eggs that you are collecting, there is no harm with him remaining with the hen.
Depending on where you are, this in not that good a time to hatch out chicks, since winter weather will be here soon.
If you separate them, the chickens will still mate with each other if you put them back together.
Most of the time, I’ve found you need at least 5-6 hens for a rooster. If you only have one hen, the rooster is likely to bother her too much, chase her around too much, and pluck the back of her head bald by continuous matings with her.
