World Agriculture Statistics

Why don’t more people see vegetarianism as a solution to healing the environment?
I was just watching part of an interview with the guys who wrote a book called Freakanomics. One of the statistics they stated was that if you drive your Prius to the grocery store and then buy a pound of ground beef that you are negating the effects of driving your hybrid 25 times over.
Of course, most of us here probably know already the environmental benefits. But I know plenty of people who act like they are concerned about global warming but still chow down on the hamburgers. It only makes sense to me that we aren’t supposed to have as many cows in the world as we have for modern agriculture – that amount of ruminant animals would not exist in the wild due to natural competition.
I hear so much about hybrids and light bulbs but rarely about the impact of agriculture. Why do you think that more environmentalists don’t discuss vegetarianism as a way to make a difference?
– Because All Gore eats meat.
– The meat and dairy industry have very powerful lobbies.
– Most people have been brain washed, in public school and the media, into believing that everyone needs meat.

Conservation Agriculture $81.25 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Conservation agriculture can best be thought of as by the statement given out by the FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations) CA is a concept for resourcesaving agricultural crop production that strives to achieve acceptable profits together with high and sustained production levels while concurrently conserving the environment (FAO 2007). With conservation agriculture (CA) there are two important elements that come with this process, two products that would seem unlikely put together. Agriculture and Conservation are two elements that seem unlikely but can coexist with each other. Agriculture according to the New Standard Encyclopedia is one of the most important sectors in the economies of most nations (New Standard 1992). At the same time conservation is the use of resources in a manner that safely maintains a resource that can be used by humans. Conservation has become critical on the fact that the world population has increased over the years and more food needs to be produced every year (New Standard 1992). Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing in Japan $58.94 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Agriculture, forestry, and fishing form the primary sector of industry of the Japanese economy, together with the Japanese mining industry, but together they account for only 1.3 of gross national product. Only 15 of Japans land is suitable for cultivation, but the agricultural economy is highly subsidized and protected. Agriculture, forestry, and fishing dominated the Japanese economy until the 1940s, but thereafter declined into relative unimportance. In the late 19th century, these sectors had accounted for more than 80 of employment. Employment in agriculture declined in the prewar period, but the sector was still the largest employer by the end of World War II. It was further declined to 23.5 in 1965, 11.9 in 1977, and to 7.2 in 1988. The importance of agriculture in the national economy later continued its rapid decline, with the share of net agricultural production in GNP finally reduced between 1975 and 1989 from 4.1 to 3 In the late 1980s, 85.5 of Japans farmers were also engaged in occupations outside of farming, and most of these parttime farmers earned most of their income from nonfarming activities. Agriculture as a Mimic of Natural Ecosystems $667.52 This book critically examines the idea that the sustainability of agriculture could be improved by mimicking the structure and processes occurring in natural ecosystems. Researchers from around the world present comparative studies of multispecies farming systems, natural ecosystems and conventional agriculture. Case studies from Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and North and South America examine the implications of increasing the complexity of farming systems on water and nutrient cycling, productivity and resilience. Theoretical issues discussed include the role of biodiversity in agriculture, the tradeoff between perenniality and productivity, the choice to integrate or segregate production and conservation in an agricultural landscape, and the social and economic challenges to adopting complex farming systems. One section is devoted to the application of this concept in southern Australia, where 15 million hectares of land are expected to be affected by salinity by the middle of the next century unless there is a significant change in agricultural practice. NeoMercantilist Policies in Agriculture $113.11 The main argument of this study is that the protection policies such as high customs tariffs, export restrictions and nontariff barriers implemented in foreign trade in various periods from the 17th century to the 20th century are still valid today and mostly implemented by countries developed in agricultural product trade. In this context, this study seeks to explain the policies commonly called as neomercantilist and implemented during the liberalization process of the world trade especially after the World War II in terms of the reasons and consequences. Another argument put forward in this study is that the policies implemented result in an unequal development process of the trade relations between the developed and underdeveloped countries in terms of the world agriculture trade. The reason is that these policies are generally set in line with the interests of the developed countries. In this process, trade interests of the underdeveloped countries are manipulated as the hegemony power of the developed countries in world agriculture markets increases. This argument will also be put forward in this study in terms of the reasons and consequences. Agriculture in Sustainable Rural Development $152.95 This book assesses the design, formulation, and implementation of Ghanas Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy II (GPRS II) and its effects on rural agricultural livelihoods development. The study reviews major literature on the role of agriculture in sustainable rural development. It offers critical perspectives on realising the potential multiplier effects of sustainable agriculture in sustainable rural development promotion in developing countries, especially those in Africa. The book offers perhaps the most comprehensive documentation of a microlevel analysis of the GPRS II on agricultural productivity and enhancing smallholder farmers livelihoods to create more private sector employment and reduce poverty. This book also has a wide applicability import, seen in its innovative and multidimensional methodology for livelihoods resilience assessment, which could be applied in analysing poverty reduction interventions elsewhere in the world. The analysis should be particularly useful to professionals and students of development planning and management, especially those interested in sustainable agricultural and other rural livelihood development issues. The End of Agriculture in the American Portfolio $201.16 American agricultural production is destined to end, argues Steven Blank, but this should be no cause for alarm. In this work, he shows that the changes leading to the end of American agricultural production are part of a natural process that is making us all better off. Beginning with broad observations from history and the current status of agriculture around the world, Blank explores how the decisions of individuals combine to make the end of American agricultural production predictable and rational. The inevitable creeping of international economic development is shown to be the sum of individual struggles facing producers across America and around the world. Also, decisions regarding operating an agricultural business derive from many interrelated peculiarities of the industry, both in America and elsewhere. The story is fascinating in its global scope and is relevant to everyone because the simple economic decisionmaking processes involved will be repeated in the story of other industries. Validity (Statistics) $60.54 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In science and statistics, validity has no single agreed definition but generally refers to the extent to which a concept, conclusion or measurement is wellfounded and corresponds accurately to the real world. The word valid is derived from the Latin validus, meaning strong. In psychometrics, validity has a particular application known as test validity: the degree to which evidence and theory support the interpretations of test scores ( as entailed by proposed uses of tests ).In the area of scientific research design and experimentation, validity refers to whether a study is able to scientifically answer the questions it is intended to answer. In clinical fields, the validity of a diagnosis and associated diagnostic tests may be assessed. It is generally accepted that the concept of scientific validity addresses the nature of reality and as such is an epistemological and philosophical issue as well as a question of measurement. The use of the term in logic is narrower, relating to the truth of inferences made from premises. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Computational Statistics in Climatology $352.17 Scientific descriptions of the climate have traditionally been based on the study of average meteorological values taken from different positions around the world. In recent years however it has become apparent that these averages should be considered with other statistics that ultimately characterize spatial and temporal variability. This book is designed to meet that need. It is based on a course in computational statistics taught by the author that arose from a variety of projects on the design and development of software for the study of climate change, using statistics and methods of random functions. A New Vision for Iowa Food and Agriculture $23.1 Francis Thicke, PhD, is a scientist, an expert on sustainable agriculture, and a practicing dairy farmer. He is widely consulted for his clear explanations of the economic and ecological forces that are changing the way we produce food in the modern world. This book draws from his background as an organic dairy farmer, and as a soil scientist who has served at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. as National Program Leader for Soil Science. This introductory book addresses topics from industrial farming (including CAFOs Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) to the ongoing conflicts between factory farms and family farms, to how family farms can be profitable after peak oil. He also examines industrial agriculture and natures own ecological methods, and shows how, in his own dairy operation, new sustainable approaches can be less costly, more productive, and return more profits to farmers. Dr. Thicke is an advocate for the systematic improvement of agricultural technology and farming methods, and for the effective use of sustainable, renewable sources of energy to achieve selfsufficiency in food production. His insights have proven increasingly relevant in the development of new public policy for Iowa, with profound implications for the United States as a whole. Effect of Trade Liberalization on Agriculture $106.74 More than a decade ago the Uganda Government embarked on a number of policy and institutional reforms in the Agricultural sector which included trade liberalization, deregulation of the domestic market for inputs and outputs, physical rehabilitation of processing plants and unified extension systems. Despite the reported remarkable progress in the liberalization of markets, there is very little empirical evidence on the effect of these policies on Supply Response and Price Volatility of agricultural commodities. This research examined the impact of liberalization on selected agricultural commodities. Its objectives were; to characterise the production and exports of key agricultural commodities in Uganda from 1970 2005, to determine the effect of trade liberalization on supply response and price volatility of key agricultural commodities and finally to determine the effect of agricultural commodity price volatility on crop production and Gross Domestic Product.Descriptive statistics and econometric methods were used to achieve the objectives. The Political Economy of West African Agriculture $84.44 West Africas agriculture has, for 150 years, been heavily geared toward export, yet the region is one of the worlds poorest. Keith Hart examines this question, focusing particularly on how this situation has affected the indigenous peoples of West Africa. Commerce has grown impressively, but productivity remains low and capital accumulation is retarded. The reasons exist primarily in internal conditions shaping social institutions. Before, during, and since colonialism, the particular problems of these preindustrial states have shaped agricultural development more than the pressure supposedly emanating from the world system of international capitalism. This book, following the classical economists as well as Marx and Lenin, argues for the necessity of rapid capitalist penetration into West African agriculture. The book is also a readable introduction to the history and ethnography of the region as a whole.
