World Agriculture Statistics
Why don’t more people see vegetarianism as a solution to healing the environment?
I was just watching part of an interview with the guys who wrote a book called Freakanomics. One of the statistics they stated was that if you drive your Prius to the grocery store and then buy a pound of ground beef that you are negating the effects of driving your hybrid 25 times over.
Of course, most of us here probably know already the environmental benefits. But I know plenty of people who act like they are concerned about global warming but still chow down on the hamburgers. It only makes sense to me that we aren’t supposed to have as many cows in the world as we have for modern agriculture – that amount of ruminant animals would not exist in the wild due to natural competition.
I hear so much about hybrids and light bulbs but rarely about the impact of agriculture. Why do you think that more environmentalists don’t discuss vegetarianism as a way to make a difference?
– Because All Gore eats meat.
– The meat and dairy industry have very powerful lobbies.
– Most people have been brain washed, in public school and the media, into believing that everyone needs meat.
